Tired but still switched on

Giving the evening somewhere to slow down.

The laptop is closed. Your mind is still replying.

You have been tired since four in the afternoon. Now the house is quiet and, inconveniently, you are wide awake. It can feel as though the evening has only just become yours.

Sleep is influenced by more than the moment you get into bed. A regular sleep schedule, caffeine timing and the light around you can all matter. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends quieter time before bed and a cool, dark sleeping environment. Caffeine’s effects can last up to eight hours. [2]

That gives us a few ordinary places to begin. Choose one change this week. You could move your last caffeinated drink earlier or give work messages a definite finishing time. Leave yourself enough time for sleep, too.

An evening you could actually keep

Suppose you hope to sleep around 11pm. At 10pm, put unfinished tasks on a short list for tomorrow. Dim the room and set your phone somewhere it will not keep asking for your attention. Spend the remaining time on something undemanding, such as reading or a warm shower.

Keep your waking time reasonably consistent over the week. Notice whether the evening becomes easier to end. Let the routine stay simple enough that it does not become another late-night project.

If sleep difficulties persist or affect your daytime life, speak with a healthcare professional. Ongoing insomnia deserves care.

Tomorrow can have its list. This part of the evening belongs to you.
